🌐A generic case for any city, or geography across the world.
❄️Every winter, every household pledges to save energy a little more; some switch to new modes of energy, some install new higher energy rating appliances, some switch to lighting and appliance automation, some go for retrofitting and better insulation, some become more conscious of their energy usage habits, some procure and install new energy management systems and connected home apps, and so on.
And one may wonder, why still there isn't aggregate high energy saving ⚡
🛠️You may have the most advanced energy-saving appliances, a house retrofitted for the highest rating, and so on, but results at the community level won’t be as favourable as expected unless some corrective measures are taken.
If one person is not using and operating the household appliance and fixtures correctly, soon the entire household will continue the wrong practice, that too this winter, and next, and throughout the lifespan of the product.
📖The problem at educational level
Education both in its literal sense and education of consumers.
🏫How many schools and colleges ensure that every child that comes out of school and college, who is going to live independently and become a household one day, has knowledge of good practices of energy saving in their home, and at least basic knowledge of how energy systems work, how many types and alternatives are there, so that when the time comes they choose rationally and behave responsibly. Practical knowledge that is going to stay with them for the rest of their life.
🛒Understanding consumer-level education. When you install a new water heater in your home for instance, you have two ways to figure out how to operate it in the most efficient way, either read the highly detailed manual in fine print handed over to you, or try to figure out from the increasingly minimalistic operating interface of the appliances (analog/digital/remote). Both types of educational ways are non-intuitive and ineffective in educating a person about the correct and efficient use of energy appliances, be it a water heater, room heater, fridge, cooler, AC unit, etc.
🍀If we do some tweaks in the educational curriculum and also if energy fixture and appliance market divert just even 5% of marketing money for educating consumers about good household energy practices, results will be phenomenal.
