To embrace AI or not, and when?

If not today, maybe tomorrow, and soon someday you are most likely to embrace AI, due to its convenience or at least due to lack of alternatives.

Consider this, how in say five odd years will you find day to day appliances without web connectivity and utilizing AI features? It will be as difficult a choice as it is today like opting for an analog model of appliance over digital ones, due to the plethora of similar price range digital choices available, or simply because analog models are out of production.

Despite looming fear and challenges associated with AI, what could be issues with not embracing AI early.

If you compare a scenario say early adopters of AI and those still stipulating the choice, be it individual, organization, city or subregion-

-Early AI adoption means early exposure and sensitization (to both good and bad aspects of AI), which means devising novel, local and contextual AI resilience and mitigation strategies and at the same time you also won’t feel alienated several year later when you think you will finally be ready to embrace AI with a robust AI governance framework and mechanism in place.

-early technological adoption historically means having an edge over competition be it a business or geography, learning goes as part of the process

-even today the life and experiences of an individual or community are not just a function of their immediate geographic boundaries, as people utilize and absorb products, information and visual content from across the world; how effective we think it would be to have a localized or subregional AI regulation, since people continue to absorb AI-cooked or AI-laced information and content all the time despite boundaries. Yes, disclosure is relevant.

-Those geographies which are embracing AI tools early will be having a different level of digital skillsets compared to those joining the league later. (Both from utilization and mitigation point of view)

As the old saying goes - Science is both advantage and a curse. AI in all its form may have its own undeniable advantages, at the same time it is also acknowledged already that AI can be very dangerous indeed if you just consider even a single aspect say deepfake abilities. But even to tackle AI based deepfake for instance, you need to have AI-skilled local manpower today, who thoroughly understands the anatomy and construct of AI, to deal with evils of AI.

While it’s difficult to say when is the right time to adopt AI, whether we should adopt it today or adopt it only when a robust governance mechanism is in place; but it appears knowing the nature of problem can be a way to devise better mitigation mechanism, and one can only know the true nature of what they are dealing with by experiencing it first hand.
